The Fam Island group is a small cluster of islands approximately 90 minutes out of Papua Paradise Eco Resort. Read the following to know more about the Fam Islands in Raja Ampat.
Scuba Diving the Fam Islands
Melissa’s Garden is one of the best dives in Raja Ampat. The oval-shaped reef is teeming with little marine life. Intensely colored coral gardens are composed of hard and soft corals, sponges, and crinoids. The beach is nestled between 3 small islands and starts at roughly 8-12 meters. Sloping down, the sandy bottom reaches 25 meters. For those who have photography as a hoppy, it is a spot not to be missed in Raja Ampat.
Rufus, a beautiful wall dive, and Anita’s Garden are also popular dive sites from the Fam Islands. At these sites, you might observe pygmy seahorses, lionfish, nudibranchs, and angelfish. In deeper regions, sea snakes and even wobbegong sharks are found.
On your face interval or if you are not a diver, you’ll need to see these islands from above. From Fam Fireplace, there’s a wooden staircase that leads to a viewpoint. The panoramic views of the lush islands will take your breath away and make you believe you’ve been whisked off to some magical place. You’ll be inspired to get back to diving or snorkeling to research all that beautiful crystal blue sea.
You might also spot some of the most pristine beaches you have ever laid eyes on. These beaches are unspoiled and will be the perfect place to have a break, have some lunch, snorkel, and sometimes have a small rest between dives.
What You’ll Need
On a day trip to the Fam Islands, you will probably be diving and will have all of your gear readied by Gangga Divers. However, if you prefer to snorkel and so are spending any time over water, sunscreen is an absolute necessity. The sun is incredibly intense in this part of the world, and you will burn very quickly without protection. A hat is also a fantastic idea.
Of course, you can’t forget your camera! This is only one of the most picturesque places you will ever travel to, and you don’t need to leave without some pictures to look back on. If you are an underwater photographer or enthusiast, this is the ideal place to get some fantastic shots.
